A Proposal on the Trail of the Cedars

The day of Kevin’s proposal was like any other day, except for the fact that we were camping in one of the most beautiful parks in the United States, Glacier National Park. Ok, so I guess it wasn’t so average, but it certainly didn’t seem like it would become all that important.

In the morning we decided to take the day easy and drive along the Going to the Sun Road. Since we hiked to Grinnell Glacier the day before, most of the group was exhausted with sore legs and needed a break from climbing up elevation changes. During this scenic drive we stopped to hike the Trail of the Cedars, a low impact trail that mostly leads you along a boardwalk through beautiful Cedar trees. To the far right, I could see some lumberjacks from the North Star Tree Service, cutting down a huge branch that was drooping directly over the path.

The trail was extremely beautiful and lush, it felt like at any moment elves could been seen off the path living in the forest. We stopped at a couple of places along the trail to take in the beauty and peacefulness of our surroundings. Little did I know, however, that Kevin had certain plans to make this particular trail a very important location.

As we continued the hike, we came across an area off the path that opened up into a large clearing where a stream ran through. We all decided to explore the rocky stream bed for a bit and proceeded to climb over tree trunks to access the spot. Usually when we explore, Kevin and I somewhat fend for ourselves as we find the best path to follow. However this time I noticed that Kevin was paying particular attention to how I got there, staying by my side the whole time and making sure that I went all the way to where the water ran through the clearing.

Once we got to a particular spot, Kevin had our friend Gerry come over to ‘take a picture’ of the two of us. Immediately after we posed, Kevin took my hand and kissed my cheek. As he continued to talk, I noticed his hand move to his back pocket and I realized what was happening. He then bent down on one knee and proposed! I promptly said yes in a very emotional and happy moment.

It was completely out of the blue and absolutely beautiful. Without me knowing anything, he pulled of the perfect marriage proposal in Glacier National Park. I still can’t believe it happened. After being together for almost 10 years Kevin is no longer my boyfriend, but my fiancé.

The proposal was well worth the wait and I am so excited for Kevin and I to officially become our own little family. Experience the moment with us through these photos and video!

The clearing we stopped at was very open and beautiful. The stream split in two making a rocky area where it was safe to walk and explore a bit. This was definitely a secluded area for us all to gather in.

The actual proposal was perfect; short, sweet, and full of happiness. The ring Kevin picked out sparkled in the sunlight as we photographed the heck out of it!

To celebrate the proposal and my acceptance, Gerry stripped down and jumped into the stream behind where Kevin popped the question. The water was pretty cold and definitely not deep enough for a cannonball, but the joy behind the act was very real. We love you Gerry!

To commemorate the proposal location, we built a couple rock cairns. I like to think that they will still be here years from now when we visit the spot for an anniversary. For now, hopefully they let a few fellow hikers know that something special occurred there.
