After spending a glorious day at the Harry Potter Leavesden Studio Tour, it was time for the northern portion of our honeymoon to begin. So we woke up early, hopped on a plane, and flew up to Inverness, Scotland to begin our exploration of the Highlands and their breathtaking scenery.

We started our introduction to the Highlands in Inverness, a small and beautiful town located at the northern point of Loch Ness, in order to have access to the beauty of the Moors at our fingertips. With plans to drive to the Isle of Skye the following day, we could think of no better town to see during that time and ended up staying at our very first official bed and breakfast, the beautiful Beach Cottage Bed and Breakfast.

Arriving in Inverness, Scotland

Considered the capital of the Highlands, Inverness is a beautiful city located at the mouth of the River Ness, in fact the name ‘Inverness’ is derived from the Scottish Gaelic: Inbhir Nis, meaning “Mouth of the River Ness”. The city is beautiful and quaint with deep roots in the history of Scotland.

You can really feel the history of the place as you move through its streets. Like most historic cities in the United Kingdom, the streets are winding and narrow. However, up in this part of the Highlands, the street signs are in both English and Gaelic, which was still widely spoken in this part of the country up until the late 19th century.

As Kevin and I arrived, we were immediately enamored with the rugged beauty of Scotland and immediately guarding against the cold. Being that is was only the beginning of March, there was still snow on the ground and a strong chill in the air. It even started lightly snowing while we had dinner in a pub in town.

A Stunning Stay at the Beach Cottage Bed and Breakfast

As we planned our Honeymoon through England and Scotland, we both wanted to experience the true bed and breakfast hospitality that can be found throughout the United Kingdom. Although we ended up using a combination of the more modern AirBnB and the traditional B&B over the course of our two week trip, we will never forget the hospitality we experienced at our very first traditional bed and breakfast in Inverness, Scotland; the Beach Cottage Bed and Breakfast.

We arrived a bit after noon and were immediately in love. The home is located right on the banks of the Moray Firth and is a former fisherman’s cottage. The structure’s history shows in it’s original stone facade, beautifully preserved, while the interior has been perfectly updated to make visitors feel comfortable and at home. The entire place is a perfect blend of old and new.

As for the bed and breakfast, both were great! We stayed in the Moray room which offered a stunning view of the Moray Firth and the islands beyond. Besides the lovely view of the sea, the room was cozy in all the right ways, complete with a hospitality tray. The breakfast was deliciously prepared by Bradley who owns and runs this B&B with a little help from his adorable dog Branston. We could not have asked for a better first bed and breakfast experience.

Heading Out to the Isle of Skye

After spending a night in Inverness, it was time to head out on the road to the Isle of Skye. Although we were sad to leave the area without exploring more of the city and we were very sad to leave the Beach Cottage Bed and Breakfast, it was time to get on the road so we could attempt to make as many stops as possible on the way to Skye. With a vow to return and a list of things to return for, we packed up our rental and prepared for our first full day of driving on the left side of the road.
