On our final day in Barcelona, we decided to head out of the city and see an area in the mountains surrounding Barcelona. So we rode the train for an hour out of the city to arrive at Montserrat Spain; a Benedictine monk mountain retreat. The small town is nestled within the mountains of Catalunya making the entire area extremely picturesque.

Within the basilica of the monastery is the famous black faced Madonna. This madonna is a wooden sculpture believed by some to have been carved in Jerusalem in the early days of the Church. It is one of the most famous Black Madonna statues in the world.

The Mountains of Montserrat Spain

The mountains surrounding Montserrat Spain and the monastery were very unique, to say the least. They are extremely smooth and seem to reached up to the sky like giant fingers. The vegetation around the mountains couldn’t seem to reach the top of the mountains as they pooled toward the flat parts of the landscape.

However, this does not mean that the area wasn’t lush. The grounds surrounding the monastery were covered in rich greens set in contrast to the stark stones. It is truly a unique and beautiful place.

The picturesque nature of Monserrat is just one of the reasons to make the journey, but it sure is a strong reason. It was truly difficult to take an unflattering picture of the region. It is like you have ascended into another time where things are peaceful and always beautiful. This is a must visit if you are in Barcelona or any of the surrounding areas.

The monastery is the Santa Maria de Montserrat and it is a beautifully detailed structure that seems to become part of the surrounding mountains. The basilica is still active today with the Escolania, Montserrat’s Boys’ Choir, performing religious ceremonies and communal prayers.

The name Monserrat means “serrated mountains”, a perfect way to describe this mountain range. They are nothing like the Rockies or the Smokies in the United States making them a completely unique experience for our group.
