Our entire trip to Barcelona there was a cathedral looming over our every move! This cathedral is a catholic church called the Temple de Sagrat Cor and it sits on top of Tibidabo.

Tibidabo is a mountain overlooking Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and it is the tallest mountain in the Serra de Collserola. On top of this mountian sits an amusement park, a telecommunications tower (Torre de Collserola), and the Temple de Sagrat Cor.

Instead of appreciating the mountain from afar, we decided to climb to the top at see the the Temple de Sagrat Cor for ourselves! During our trip we continuously heard people talk about walking to the top instead of taking the train up. So we decided to do just that and follow the cathedral to the top.

This may not have been the smartest plan as we definitely almost got lost a few times during the journey, but we decided that as long as we were going up toward the cathedral, we were going to right way. And the lack of clear direction increased the overall sense of discovery making the entire experience memorable.

Tibidabo Mountain Amusement Park

The amusement park at the top of Tibidabo is one of the oldest in the world as it is currently 100 years old. It was a very neat spot that was completely different from any other area in Barcelona. Since we spent the whole day exploring the mountain in order to reach the amusement park, we didn’t get the chance to ride any of the 25 rides currently running.

Instead we relaxed and had an early dinner as we overlooked the city on top of Tibidabo. Then we took it easy and rode the Funicular down the mountain to a spot where we could catch the metro back to our hostel.

The beginning of our hike started within the streets of the Northwest part of the city of Barcelona. However this does not mean that the beginning was particularly easy. This part of the city begins to dissolve into the mountains, giving the streets a steep incline.

As we continued to hike upwards, we were constantly afforded beautiful views of the entire city of Barcelona. This made exploring off the beaten path worth it as we could enjoy a more unimpeded view. We also made sure to keep the Temple de Sagrat Cor in our sights as we made our way toward it. That way, we never felt lost!

When we finally made it to the Tibidabo Mountain Amusement Park it was with a great sense of accomplishment and relief! Our entire group was ready to have a relaxing sit while we enjoyed some good old fashion amusement park food. Which, interestingly, seems to be the same from country to country.

Although seeing any stray animal makes me want to immediately take them in, there was something these mountain cats that screamed independence and self sufficiency. They were beautiful and relatively friendly.
