On our way to La Libertad

The first part of Kevin and I’s month in the Philippines was spent in La Libertad, a municipality located in the province of Negros Oriental in the central Visayas. This town is located near the water and has a beautifully scenic relationship with the coast and the nearby island of Cebu.

The Journey to La Libertad

In order to reach La Libertad, we had to take a boat to cross the channel between the islands of Cebu and Negros. The boat ride was about an hour and although there was a storm while we made the trip, it was a very beautiful way to arrive to La Libertad.

The water in the Philippines is so clear and generally peaceful that it makes you want to jump in and explore. It also makes it possible to use smaller, lighter fishing boats that add a sense of peace to the scene.

With the added effect of the storm, the approach to La Libertad was like the approach to the island of Jurassic Park. The silhouetted mountains in the midst with the tropical vegetation coming to the forefront was a beautifully scenic approach.

Once we arrived in La Libertad, we promptly headed to the family home where Kevin’s father grew up. In the next few days, the descendants of Samuel and Perfecta Banogon would gather here for a Banogon Family Reunion. Although Kevin had previously been to the Philippines, he was too young to entirely remember the experience. Therefore this was the first time Kevin was able to meet and connect with his family in the Philippines. Personally, I was very excited to meet them all myself!
