Starting the Hike to Grinnell Glacier

The morning we arrived at Glacier National Park, we decided not to waste any time and set off on our first hike of the trip. So we ate some breakfast and began our trek to Grinnell Glacier!

The entire hike to Grinnell Glacier was a series of amazing views. At every turn there was a dramatic scene waiting to be photographed, which explains why there are so many pictures in this post.

The beginning of the hike was a relatively easy loop around Swiftcurrent Lake. The lake was very large and scenic, but the best part was our close encounter with a young Bull Moose. We had just rounded a corner of the trail and were surrounded by trees with a slightly paved trail in front of us. There was a rustling in the tress to our left and a few steps of the trail was a Bull Moose, antlers and all. He was still young so he wasn’t as big as a fully grown adult, but was still intimidating. He was scared of us and basically struggled his way further into the trees. It was all too quick to get a picture of him, but we all swear it happened and it was magically chaotic.

As we continued the trail began leading us steadily up the mountains in order to reach the glacier. After about an hour and a half to two hours hiking, it started to rain. This definitely added quite a bit of drama to the scenic views from the trail. After hiking in the rain for another hour or so, the storm cleared and it was suddenly hot outside again. We arrived at the Glacier in the blazing sun, ready to dip our feet in some icy glacier water.

The beginning of the hike to Grinnell Glacier was a pretty peaceful, easy stroll through a lush forest along the shore of beautiful lakes. We all took our time during this part of the trail since the lakes were big and gorgeous. We even took a moment to put the rock skipping techniques of our group to the test!

Once we reached a certain point on the trail, it was like entering a completely different landscape. Instead of being engulfed by the trees, we were suddenly rising above them.

As we continued to gain elevation, the views became increasingly dramatic and jaw-dropping. It was hard to believe the elevation we had gained as we hiked since the rise seemed so gradual. It wasn’t until later that the climb became more drastic.
