Growing up in Florida gives you an unlimited access to outdoor activities involving water that are even available options year round. Canoeing through the Everglades, paddle boarding during sunset, or jumping into the cool waters of a nearby spring were all easily planned and executed activities that we could indulge in any weekend of the year. However moving to Atlanta, Georgia has made it significantly more difficult to find an outdoor activity that involves access to water. So when the opportunity arose for whitewater rafting the Ocoee River outside of Chattanooga, we jumped to claim it.

The opportunity actual came in the form of a Groupon deal to buy six seats with the company High Country Adventures for a 3-hour ride down the middle section of the Ocoee River. Once the purchase was made, gathering friends to join us became easy! Three of Kevin’s fellow coworkers at the Southeast Conservation Corps quickly agreed to join us and our close friend, Alicia, flew up from Miami to take the last spot and visit for the weekend.

Our Rafting Experience Down the Ocoee River

Before getting into the boat to begin your journey down the river, the raft guides take you through a quick safety course and load you up on a bus to travel to the starting point. From there we met our raft guide, Charity, got into position around the boat, and prepared to take off down the rapids with the rest of the of group. There were about 10 boats in total in our group with High Country Adventures while other companies boats were also preparing to launch.

Besides having the ability to take video and pictures during the experience, one of the best things about having a GoPro with you is that they will sit you in the front so you can get better footage. And being in the front was pretty awesome! There is something so much more exciting about crashing face first into water when it is completely head on and you can clearly see what you are going into before it hits.

Overall the experience was a ton of fun and made you want to repeat it immediately. The water was definitely colder than my thin Florida blood is used to, but it felt extremely refreshing. One of our favorite moments was during a calm portion of the river where we were invited to jump out of the boat and into the water for a quick dip. Getting back in the boat was less than graceful, but floating down a river will never loose its charm.

Whitewater Rafting the Ocoee River with High Country Adventures

There are a lot of companies to choose from when looking for whitewater rafting on the Ocoee River and many of them have offers available on Groupon. Although we have only used one so far, that one made it an excellent experience. The raft guides at High Country Adventures were all friendly, fun, and made us feel safe on the river.

The photographer that worked different points on the river was also excellent! So good that we had to purchase the full photo package so we could have the digitals from the day and we are the people that never purchase the photos!
